Start Guide — Secure Wallet Setup

A friendly, step-by-step template to get your hardware wallet ready — clear, secure, and privacy-first.

This page is a customizable start template you can adapt for your own documentation or onboarding flow. It prioritizes safety-first language, step clarity, and accessible microcopy. Important: this is a sample guide — treat it as a template, not a substitute for official product documentation.

Unbox & Inspect — Confirm package integrity

Before you power the device, visually inspect packaging seals and the device itself. Look for tamper indicators, unexpected scratches, or stickers that don't match the manufacturer. If anything looks altered, do not use the unit — contact the vendor directly via their official support channels.

Download Official Companion App

Use only the official companion application from the vendor's verified site or official app stores. Avoid community builds or third-party installers. Once downloaded, confirm the app's digital signature and check for recent updates before connecting your device.

Initialize Device — Set a strong PIN

Power on the device and follow the on-screen flow to create a PIN. Choose a PIN that's easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess — avoid birthdays or simple sequences. The device will lock itself after several wrong attempts to protect funds from brute force.

Record Your Recovery Seed — write it down physically

The recovery seed (a list of words) is the ultimate backup. Write it by hand on paper or a metal plate designed for seed storage. Do not photograph, screenshot, or store the seed in cloud-synced notes. Treat the seed like cash: if someone obtains it, they can recreate your wallet.

Verify Seed & Address — sanity-check on-device

After recording, the device will ask you to confirm the seed by selecting or entering words. Complete the verification step. Also check the first receiving address displayed on the device against the one shown in the app — ensure both match before receiving funds.

Practice with a Small Transfer

Send a small test amount first. This confirms that your wallet, app, and device are all communicating correctly. Once confirmed, wait for on-chain confirmations and only then send larger amounts.

Maintenance & Updates

Keep firmware and companion apps up to date. Only install firmware updates announced via official vendor channels. Always read changelogs and follow the vendor's update instructions exactly — do not interrupt during firmware flashing.

Store Your Backup Securely

Store copies of your recovery seed in multiple physically separate secure locations (e.g., safe, deposit box). Consider splitting the seed across multiple secure deposits if you want redundancy without a single point of failure. Use tamper-resistant containers if possible.

Emergency Plan & Inheritance

Plan how trusted parties can access funds if you become unable to. Use clear, encrypted estate instructions or trust services. Never publish seeds or PINs in wills directly — instead, leave location and access instructions handled by a lawyer or trusted executor.

Privacy & Operational Security

Be mindful of the device's environment when using it. Avoid public Wi-Fi while transacting, and limit exposure of addresses and transaction metadata. Consider using software wallets for day-to-day small amounts while keeping larger holdings on the hardware device.
